Icelandinc musician, Bjork, held a music video contest for their 2nd single of the album Volta, Innocence.

bjork.com provided the track, lyrics and some elements to be animated. Although deadline was pushed one month ahead, participants were allowed to send in their work in progress. This time I decided to be a bit more typographical, playing with writing and colors sync to the contagious beat.

American music composer, Randy Miller, contacted me to develop his website which included a 30-second motion graphic introduction that showcased his work, and highlighted him as a film scorer. This video includes footage of films such as The Soong Sisters, Spartacus, Without Limits and Shanghai Red.

Brazilian Electro-Funk-Pop group, CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy), got together with Italian broadcast company, QOOB to hold a music video contest for their Alcohol song (featuring in the Cansei de Ser Sexy CD).

The band and QOOB provided the track and green screen video footage of them fooling around and sync. The song stars with

‘this is so weird, am I sleeping’,

so I decided to feel the song and made it as simple as posible, with simple shapes and sound sync to create something wacky and dizzying.

This DemoReel was made on December 2006 as part of my new promotional package. Some of the pieces that you can see in this Demoreel are Shanghai Red, Eve & the Fire Horse – web work for Roger Kupelian, web work for Firelight Cinema, Harmony: The Quest For Companionship, several photographs, etc.

Que Es Sexo? is a 30 second PSA about HIV and AIDS in Spanish. The project started a few months before with research and interviews asking people to think of words they related to the word ‘sex’. The response was varied and we condensed the answers in the most commonly given, and gave it a typographic twist in it.

The video has received over seven thousand views, as we keep on spreading HIV and AIDS awareness to the Peruvian (and LatinAmerican) youth.

This Demo Reel (which you can check out with this long link) was made on November 2005 as part of my promotional package. It all started out as an experiment with texture and fun!
The idea behind it is to show me as I can only be – what you see is what you get. I like to have FUN with my work, it’s all about the passion. Each and every piece that you will see here was done out of my passion for each project.

Some of the pieces that you can see in this Demo Reel are the Award Bumper, Nayeli – an animation pitch/trailer, a made-up commercial for Skyttles, a pitch for The Tree of Life, Harmony: The Quest For Companionship, several photographs, drawings, websites, including the Canadian Film release of Eve & The Fire Horse, which will be later release in 2006.

Besides from loving to work with motion graphics, websites and taking pictures, I enjoy drawing and, most of all, writing. I haven’t written anything professionally, however, in the past 2 years I have finished two 100-pages stories (one in English, and another in Spanish), one paper of 21 pages on Numerology, two one-shot stories and two film scripts for Backbone Medley and Harmony.

We had to prepare a concept for our promotional package that included Print, Video and DVD. I worked with DVD Pro to create an interface very much similar to the website I developed, that match the style that I have chosen.

Harmony: The Quest For Companionship was born out of my interest in Comparative Mythology and the Hero’s Journey. I was first introduced to this terms in year 2004, when I took my final course of Writing at Foundation Visual Art & Design, instructor Jennica Harper briefly explained story structure, and I was instantly hooked. After graduating, I went back to Peru where I spent some time figuring out where were my strengths and what I really wanted to do with my life.

All of a sudden, my interest on this topic grew and I found myself reading several essays on-line about this fascinating topic. Later on, I found myself writing a brief essay on the Tao-ji symbol (Yin & Yang), and in the blink of an eye – I was already back in Canada trying to figure out what to do for my final project.
In my search for more information about Joseph Campbell’s ideas, as well as C.G Jung’s ideas of the Collective Unconscious, I couldn’t find many visual aids, so I thought it was going to be a great adventure for me. But where should I begin to explain such a broad topic?

It all began by a great research on the topic, trying to focus in the most important and relevant points of someone’s (the hero’s) journey. Two weeks later, and a 3-hour brainstorming session later, I was ready to plan my story in script format. I had already a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to have, so I put it on paper, and after a week, I had already a script that didn’t change much when turned into storyboards. The storyboards turned into a pretty detailed animatic that then went to the Audio Department, where Sound Designers Liam Wong & Craig George would get a basic idea of what sounds to make. During that process, I started doing the drawings and illustrations needed for the animation.

The piece earned me a nomination for Best Project Management in the DD02 Graduation, as well as an award for Best Animation at the My Hero Film Festival.
